How to Catch the Interest of the Reviewer of Your “After College” CV?

Now that you have graduated from college and are ready to start your journey as an adult, you need to find a job. Today's world is so advanced that the competition is now enormous, which leads us to the most important thing you must think of when looking for a job – your resume. And since this is your first resume as a college graduate, it is supposed to be perfect.

So, what should you do? Let's go step by step and see how you can catch the interest of the reviewer of your first 'after college' CV.

A Career Objective

Right after you write down your name and contact information, you need to list a career objective. The reviewer of your CV should be clear on the position you want to obtain. Not only the objective must fit the positions they offer, but a clear career objective states who you are and what you expect to achieve, too.

If you wish to see samples of career objectives, have a look at Susan Ireland's resume site.

Education

As a new graduate, we are guessing that your college degree is the greatest qualification you have at the moment. Therefore, this should stay at the top of the resume, at least until you get a higher degree or one that is more relevant to the job you are applying for.

When listing your education, make sure that you include:

  • The school where you got your degree
  • Your major
  • Your graduation year
  • Your grade point average, if it is high
  • Any honors

If you decide to showcase your honors, you need to make sure that they represent skills that are relevant to the job position you are applying for. If they only illustrate how you did in school, you may not want to overwhelm the reviewer with it.

You may want to consider whether your coursework is relevant to your career objective. As Beth Brown, the co-author of The Damn Good Resume Guide: A Crash Course in Resume Writing says, you can always include a list of coursework in the education section. If it is, you should place it in education or in work experience, as long as it fits the criteria.

Experience

As is the case with the education, you should also keep the most relevant experience at the top of your resume, right under the section 'Education'. Considering that your experience is most probably relevant to your college major and post-graduate interests, it is always better that the first job you are applying to fits your current qualifications.

If you emphasize the most important experiences, you are not only presenting yourself as a professional, but are also aiding the recruiter in seeing why you are the best choice for the job position.

We've mentioned that you can use coursework as your experience if it fits the criteria. What does this mean? It means that the coursework you have handled somehow equates to the job you are applying for.

Extracurriculars

Recruiters see extracurricular experiences as something you can do to develop your skills further. However, if you have many such experiences, it is best to focus on those that best present you to the resume reviewer.

Format your extracurriculars the same way that you did your work experience. List the organization name, the dates of the activity, your role in the project, bullet points about what you've accomplished and links if available. Details are highly appreciated if the extracurricular activity helped you improve for the job position you are applying for.

Skills

Skills are one of the last points in a resume. Generally speaking, everyone has certain skills they want to show off, but this is not something you can always do in a resume. You may know how to play the piano, but this is not something you can include in a job application for a pharmacist, for example.

Therefore, you should always make sure that the skills you list fit the requirements of your potential employer.

Interests

You can choose to list the skills and interests as one point or separate ones. Regardless of your choice, the two come on the bottom of your resume. As is the case with skills, your list of interests must also be relevant to the job position.

In cases where the experience you have at the moment does not fit the job position you are applying for, you may choose to place the list of interests and skills a bit higher in your resume. This is a rare case, but there are students who change their career goals after they get their degree.

Writing your first resume after graduating from college is a complex task that needs your full attention to details. Make sure that your first resume is perfect so that you can get the job you have been dreaming of!
